The MRI is supporting a call issued by the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists – in collaboration with other early career associations and networks – for early career researchers from various disciplines to come together to produce a group review of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Working Group II contribution to the 6th Assessment Report.
The First Order Draft of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II contribution to the 6th Assessment Report is due to be published around 2021. The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), Permafrost Young Researchers Network (PYRN), Young Earth System Scientists (YESS), PAGES Early-Career Network (PAGES-ECN), the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI), and the Interdisciplinary Marine Early Career Network (IMECaN) are coordinating the next review of this report by early-career experts, taking place between October and November 2019.
Since April 2018, the APECS-IPCC working group has taken part in two rounds of review of the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (SROCC). More than one hundred international early career reviewers have participated. Through their participation, reviewers not only get recognized as early career experts, but also gain valuable training and insight into the scientific review process of reports written for policymakers.
Reviewers are now being sought for the first round of review of the IPCC AR6 WGII report. We encourage researchers from various career stages to participate, including advanced Masters students, PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and early career faculty members. In order to participate, please fill out this form by 15 September 2019 (23:59 GMT). The assessment of applications and selection of participants will be based on motivation and research experience. In the selection of applicants, a balance will be sought based on gender, career stage, and geographic location. Accepted participants will be assigned to a chapter and contacted by the end of October 2019.
This round of reviews will take place from October 30th to November 30th 2019. Please ensure that you have the necessary amount of time available during this period. Previous reviewers spent on average 40 hours on the process, including the training and review period. You must be familiar with recent literature in your field, and you will be asked to review a minimum of 10 to 20 pages of the report (please note that if you want to review the entire report, IPCC offer opportunities on their side). These are not anonymous reviews; you will be individually credited for your contribution, and your comments will be public record.
