On 14 October, during the Belmont Forum’s first ever virtual plenary, the Mountain Research Initiative was voted in as the Forum’s newest partner organization.

Established in 2009, the Belmont Forum is a partnership of funding organizations, international science councils, and regional consortia committed to the advancement of transdisciplinary science. The Belmont Forum’s operations are guided by the Belmont Challenge, a vision document that encourages international transdisciplinary research that provides knowledge for understanding, mitigating, and adapting to global environmental change.

During the Belmont Forum’s first ever virtual plenary earlier this month – at which members, partners, and special guests came together to advance Forum business and decide on which new transdisciplinary, transnational funding calls to lend support to – the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) was welcomed into the fold as the newest Forum partner organization, following a successful application process. In this role, the MRI will be working collaboratively to help meet the Belmont Challenge through activities such as issuing international calls for proposals, committing to and working towards best practices for open data access, and providing transdisciplinary training.

“We are delighted to have been accepted as a Belmont Forum partner organization,” said MRI Executive Director Carolina Adler upon learning of the outcome of the vote. “This is an exciting opportunity for the MRI to directly contribute to the Belmont Forum’s important work, helping to shape future funding calls and engaging in fruitful collaborations with other networks and funding agencies to support and scale training opportunities – among other prospects!”

“I hope and expect that via this partnership we can continue to elevate the cause for global change research in mountains, including transdisciplinary research collaboration opportunities for our up-and-coming generation of mountain research scientists, globally.”
