The INARCH 5th Annual Workshop of the International Network for Alpine Research Catchment Hydrology (INARCH) on March 31 and April 1, 2020 will be held in Zaragoza and Benasque, in the Spanish Pyrenees, and will be hosted by Professor Ignacio López Moreno, Pyrenean Institute of Ecology.

Participants will meet in Zaragoza on March 30 and travel together to Benasque, with stops along the way to see some of the unique hydrological features, and return to Zaragoza on April 1.

The workshop will bring together the INARCH group to follow up on activities, progress, and plans towards its overall objective and its research questions relating to alpine hydrology. This will follow on from the WMO High Mountain Summit with a major theme focused on Integrated Mountain Observing and Prediction Systems, merging observations and prediction into coherent systems. Other topics will include forest and vegetation hydrological impacts, remote sensing advances and opportunities, next-generation snow and glacier modelling, and high resolution atmospheric modelling. The workshop will provide an opportunity to build and extend linkages with other international mountain climate and water science initiatives and to plan for the next phases and research priorities post-INARCH.

INARCH will have reached the end of its initial 5-year term as a GEWEX GHP cross-cut project, and so this workshop will provide the chance to wrap up and summarize outcomes. We truly hope that you are able to participate.

The workshop will involve a scoping of activities in various parts of the world:

  • What is the state of observations including remote sensing advances and what is new near or on the ground?
  • What is the state of and prospects for coupling atmospheric, cryospheric and hydrological models?
  • How close are we to integrated OP systems in mountain regions around the world and what are the steps to get there?
