A talk by Dr. Axel Michaelowa of the Perspectives Climate Group and the Institute of Political Science at the University of Zurich.

Talk abstract: With close to 40,000 participants, COP26 in Glasgow was the largest UN climate conference ever, followed by Paris in 2015 and Copenhagen in 2009. Key agenda items of COP26 included international climate finance, mitigation ambition, the finalization of the rulebook on international market mechanisms (Article 6), the detailed approaches to reporting of national emissions and progress in reaching emissions pledges (NDCs) (Article 13), and common time frames for NDCs. Adaptation and loss and damage were further key topics. Overall, COP26 has established a firm basis for the implementation of the Paris Agreement. The short-term emissions gap remains but will get smaller.

Speaker: Dr. Axel Michaelowa of the Institute of Political Science at the University of Zurich and Perspectives Climate Group.

Dr. Axel Michaelowa is a leading expert on international climate policies and carbon market mechanisms. He was lead author on international mitigation policies in the 4th and 5th IPCC Assessment Reports between 2006 and 2013.
