The AlpWeek is an international event co-organised by the leading Alpine organisations committed to mountain protection and sustainable development.

The 2022 edition will take place in in the Alpine town of Brig-Glis in Switzerland, at the foot of the beautiful Simplon Pass. The two-day AlpWeek will lead to the Alpine Conference on 8 September also in Brig-Glis, thus bringing together citizens and stakeholders to discuss the manifold aspects of transition in the Alps.

Alps in transition

Rethinking Alpine lifestyles for an ecologically, socially and economically sustainable transition. The ecological transition is already happening in the Alps – and we are in the middle of it. In order to face the unprecedented environmental and sustainability challenges ahead, we need to change our lifestyles and rethink our energy consumption, our production methods, our food supply… Beyond the energy, economic and agri-food transitions, many other sectors are experiencing transition of their own, such as tourism, mobility or spatial planning.

We want to explore these topics – and many more – during the AlpWeek 2022 in Brig-Glis. There is no single solution but rather many different approaches to the ecological transition in the Alps. Quality of life, carbon-fiendly living, and citizen participation will be at the core of the solutions we will develop during the AlpWeek.

Be part of the discussion!

Whether you are a young person, a member of a non-profit organisation, a researcher, a civil servant, a politician, or an Alpine inhabitant, we invite you to join the AlpWeek and share your ideas to shape the transition in the Alps. Inspiring keynotes, interactive workshops, cultural happenings, local excursions as well as a youth conference are in the making. The MRI @ the AlpWeek

Session 3 | Tuesday, 6.9.2022 | 14:00-15:30

MRI Chair Jörg Balsiger and MRI executive director Carolina Adler will be present at the AlpWeek and lead session 3 'Onwards, upwards? - Climate adaptation and internal migration: opportunities and challenges in mountain areas' on Tuesday, 6 September. Come and join us!

Abstract: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has just confirmed it once again: the human influence on the climate is clear and has a concrete impact on weather extremes in all regions of the world. Many of the emerging risks are clustered in urban areas, where more than half of the world's population lives. Although urbanisation will continue, the move away from cities, intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic and the spread of mobile working, is a serious phenomenon. Co-working spaces in Crans-Montana or Verbier are harbingers of this, as are the rapid rise in the price of real estate in mountain areas or the shift of political majorities to landscape debates. The aim of the workshop is to shed light on the new urge to move to the mountains, to address its economic, political and cultural and ecological impacts, to discuss the opportunities and dangers it brings, and to show concrete examples of how to deal with climate-induced migration or how to prepare for it. The outcome of the workshop is a transdisciplinary agenda for knowledge development on the topic.
