The latest IPCC report included a cross-chapter specific on mountain issues. Among other things, it discusses the importance of adaptation measures for fighting climate change in mountains. This side-event will look at these findings and discuss how to promote adaptation initiatives in mountains.

Session Aims

  • Consider how a science-policy dialogue (based on the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report and its Cross-Chapter Paper 5) focusing on mountains can be built within the framework of the UNFCCC.
  • Discuss how to strengthen science-policy dialogue and investigate how findings coming from the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report and its Cross-Chapter Paper 5 can be used to develop policies.
  • Share case studies of best practices in relation to promoting and scaling adaptation options that offer practical solutions to reduce climate risks and build on diverse knowledge systems, including indigenous knowledge.
  • Discuss how to bridge existing gaps across different alliances and processes dedicated to sustainable mountain development. Which stakeholders need to be considered and how could this coordination be enhanced?
