At the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly in 2015, a splinter meeting organized by the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) explored options for future activities within the Elevation-Dependent Warming (EDW) Working Group, following a paper published by this Working Group in Nature Climate Change. At the splinter meeting, participants identified key research gaps on EDW, including the need to: i) improve and homogenize observations and use better metadata; ii) derive results from single-site measurements that are representative for large regions; iii) ensure a better combination of observations and model outputs; iv) understand the drivers of EDW and better characterize the critical elevation band that is most affected in the different regions and seasons; and v) improve models by increasing their spatial resolution and improving the parameterization schemes.

During the EGU General Assembly in 2019, a side meeting workshop will continue this theme and reconvene the EDW Working Group collective and new interested participants, linking to the EGU 2019 session titled Mountain Climatology and Meteorology and related topics (e.g.,characterizing change and impacts), to broaden participation and exchange. The key objectives for this side event are:

1. To benefit from diverse contributions to the EGU 2019 Session on “Mountain Meteorology and Climatology” and explore options to bring the content together in a review or synthesis paper(s) as a concrete outcome and output of this side event workshop, updating the state on knowledge on the topic;

2. To offer the envisaged paper from this meeting as a contribution to the current IPCC Sixth Assessment reporting cycle, namely in Working Group I on the Physical Science Basis and/or Working Group II on Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation. The IPCC has specified deadlines for submitted papers for consideration in AR6: 31 December 2019 (WGI), and 1 July 2020 (WGII). Planning and timeframes to consider for the envisaged paper(s) as part of this side event workshop will be around these key dates;

3. To connect and enhance collaboration among scientists involved in the mountain meteorology and climatology research communities, including collaboration and activity among the MRI EDW Working Group with whom other research prospects and/or collaboration activities could be identified.

4. Foster connection through exchange and networking.
