We are pleased to announce the call for applications for the tenth International Programme on Research and Training on Sustainable Management of Mountain Areas, or IPROMO, as the training programme on sustainable mountain development is better known. Jointly organized by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the University of Turin, Italy and from this year also by the University of Tuscia, Italy, IPROMO has the high patronage of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The theme this year is “Environmental and economic issues to enhance mountain sustainability”.
Mountain ecosystems are increasingly affected by global challenges such as food insecurity, climate change, land degradation and natural disasters. The extreme vulnerability of these ecosystems puts their natural resources under increasing pressure, which heavily affects the mountain peoples who depend on these resources for their livelihoods by exacerbating poverty and triggering social tensions, out-migration and depopulation.
Lowland as well as highland communities depend on mountains. In fact, over half of the human population depend on mountains for water, biodiversity, forests and clean energy. Yet in spite of this clear evidence of their global importance and of their disproportionate vulnerability to global challenges, mountains still do not receive the required attention in international negotiations and national policy making.
The course will run from 5 to 19 July 2017 with two weeks of full-immersion learning. It will include lectures, practical work and excursions. The course will be held in Ormea (North-West Italy) and Pieve Tesino (North-East Italy) and will be in English. Instructors are being identified and will include a mix of university professors, FAO officers and colleagues from regional or international organizations, who work on sustainable mountain development.
About 30 professionals will be admitted to the course and preference will be given to participants coming from countries and organizations that are members of the Mountain Partnership. This course is geared toward technical officers, hence applicants from the academic world will not be given priority. Participants from developing countries are encouraged to apply.
The total cost of the course (inclusive of full board, accommodation, taxes, teaching equipment, internal transfers but excluding travel costs) is 3 000 Euros. Please note that scholarships will ONLY cover on-site costs (lodging and tuition) and are available for participants from developing countries. Travel costs will not be covered.
Excellent knowledge of English, a university degree preferably in a technical area such as Agriculture, Forestry, Biology, Geology or Geography, and relevant work experience are prerequisites.
