November saw a number of important developments related to the global assessments. 
 
Earlier this month, a call was issued for review and synthesis papers on climate change adaptation for the 6th Assessment Report of the IPCC (AR6). Preparations are underway in Geneva for the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) Global Risk Assessment in 2019, and calls for contributions on indigenous and local knowledge are still open for the IPBES Global Assessment effort.
 
 

Call for papers | Climate change adaptation
The journal Mountain Research and Development (MRD) and the MRI have issued a call for review and synthesis papers for a focus issue on climate change adaptation. The focus issue aims to make relevant content on climate change adaptation in mountain regions available for the IPCC's 6th Assessment Report (AR6). The AR6 assessment process is scheduled to start in 2019, with eventual publication taking place in 2021. We hope that through this focus issue, knowledge gaps in terms of comparable experiences with climate change adaptation measures in mountains can be addressed, especially in terms of effectiveness within and across regions and on a global scale. Calls for extended abstract proposals are due by 19 January 2018.


Global Risk Assessment efforts underway for key events in 2019
In November, disaster risk experts from around the world met at the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) in Geneva to deliberate on plans for a Global Risk Assessment Framework to support the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the Paris Agreement. A key objective of the meeting was to identify challenges that must be overcome to create a global risk assessment framework that is inclusive of all hazards included in the scope of the Sendai Framework. It is expected that a global risk assessment framework will be presented in the upcoming 2019 Global Assessment Report (GAR), which will be produced in time for the UN High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development and the Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction, both in May 2019. At MRI, we are monitoring and participating in these developments to ensure that mountain-specific knowledge and scientific input relevant for these efforts are included. Stay tuned!

IPBES | Call still open for contributions on Indigenous and Local Knowledge [ILK] for the IPBES Global AssessmentHome

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) invites experts on ILK, holders of ILK, and their organizations and networks to engage with and support the Global Assessment of IPBES. The MRI encourages the mountain research community with expertise and contacts on the subject to consider contributing, helping to develop and guide relevant content. Of particular importance are resources such as data, information, knowledge, other forms of expression, networks, organizations, and individual experts, which could greatly enrich and inform the assessment.

The deadline for contributions is 20 December 2017.
