The deadline to register for the International Mountain Conference 2019 is fast approaching! Registration closes 15 May 2019.

The International Mountain Conference 2019 (IMC 2019) will take place 8-12 September 2019 at the University of Innsbruck in Austria. Building upon the legacy of the Perth mountain conference series, IMC 2019 aims to encourage in-depth, cross-disciplinary exchange and collaboration, and will provide an excellent opportunity for experts from different disciplines to come together and discuss mountains, their responses to climate and other changes, and their resilience as social-ecological systems.

According to IMC 2019 organizers, to date there have been 355 registrations – meaning that over two-thirds of all researchers that submitted abstracts are currently registered. The MRI is looking forward to many contributions from the MRI community of researchers during IMC 2019, and we would like to take this opportunity to remind those who have not yet done so to register by 15 May.

Keynote Speakers

Among the exciting list of IMC 2019 keynote speakers is MRI Science Leadership Council member Irasema Alcántara Ayala, an expert in landslides, vulnerability, and integrated disaster risk. She'll be giving a talk exploring integrated research on disaster risk, and the challenges and opportunities this topic holds for the future of mountains.

The full list of keynote speakers is as follows:

  • Christoph Schär: 'Weather and Climate Modeling in the Alps: From the Early Beginnings to Climate Change.'
  • Mark Aldenderfer: 'The Deep Prehistory of the Human Presence in the World's Mountains and Plateaus.'
  • Markku Kulmala: 'The Significance of Continuous Comprehensive Observations: From Atmospheric Clustering Via Feedback Loops to Global Climate and Air Quality.'
  • Christian Körner: 'Alpine Biota Under Environmental Change.'
  • Daniel Viviroli: 'Lowland Inhabitants Depend Increasingly on Mountain Water Resources: A Global View from Mid-20th to Mid-21st Century.'
  • Irasema Alcántara Ayala: 'Integrated Research on Disaster Risk: Challenges and Opportunities for the Future of Mountains.'
  • Olivier Henry-Biabaud: 'Mapping the Growing Overtourism Sentiment in Europe: What Residents Tell Us.'
  • Hilde Björkhaug: 'Mountain Agriculture in the Bioeconomy.'

Interactive Workshops

In addition to keynote speeches, the conference will be structured around a series of interactive workshops. This format aims to faciliate both knowledge sharing and the development of synthesis products. The workshops will focus on:

  • The investigation of processes and the detection of changes in climate and other factors more or less influenced by climate (e.g., social, environmental, or infrastructural changes)
  • The consequences of changes with respect to the vulnerabilities of socio-ecological systems
  • Strategies for adaptation and transformation

Contribute to IPCC Cross-Chapter Paper on Mountains

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) will serve to bring international knowledge on climate change up to date, examining the impacts and risks and outlining potential options for mitigation and adaption. Significantly, AR6 will feature a Cross-Chapter Paper on Mountains as a part of the Working Group II contribution – with MRI Executive Director Carolina Adler having been nominated to co-lead the process of drafting it. The development of the Cross-Chapter Paper on Mountains will rely on papers produced by the research community that represent the current state of knowledge on this topic.

The deadline for the submission of papers for the WGII AR6 contribution – including the Cross-Chapter-Paper on Mountains – is 1 July 2020, with accepted literature for inclusion in the Final Draft due 15 May 2021. The IMC 2019 therefore provides a timely platform to develop valuable sectoral / regional review or assessment papers to support the Cross-Chapter-Paper on Mountains. We encourage researchers to identify potential contributions, form peer groups, and make use of the IMC 2019 to coordinate and start developing papers.
