How can education contribute to sustainable development in mountain areas? This new focus issue of Mountain Research and Development (MRD), guest-edited by MRI Chair Jörg Balsiger and former MRD MountainMedia Editor Martin Price, seeks to provide answers to this question.

A multiplicity of educational experiences, programs, and approaches exist or are currently being designed—in, on, or for mountains. A new focus issue of the open access journal Mountain Research and Development (MRD)  offers some answers to the question of how education can contribute to sustainable development in mountain areas. Articles present examples and insights from around the world and cover a wide range of formal and informal education at all levels, including practical training and lifelong learning opportunities.

This focus issue of MRD was guest-edited by MRI Chair Jörg Balsiger and former MRD MountainMedia Editor Martin Price.

"We hope readers will find that the articles in the peer-reviewed sections of this focus issue provide a useful set of examples and insights into education for sustainable mountain development around the world, and that they will provide a basis for future research, policy, and action that will benefit those who live and work in mountain areas." – Jörg Balsiger & Martin Price.

In addition to serving as MRI Chair, Balsiger also leads the MRI's Education for Sustainable Mountain Development (ESMD) Working Group. An article presenting the results of a survey carried out in the context of the MRI's ESMD Working Group can also be found in this special MRD focus issue. The article – 'Education for Sustainable Mountain Development: Preliminary Insights From a Web-based Survey of Opportunities'  outlines key insights into mountain studies programs around the world and their potential to contribute to sustainable mountain development.
