Earlier this month, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) announced the final selection of experts nominated to work on its Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) – the next comprehensive evaluation of the science related to climate change. Among them were three Mountain Research Initiative representatives.

AR6 will serve to bring international knowledge on climate change up to date, examining the impacts and risks and outlining potential options for mitigation and adaption. The report will be developed by the three IPCC Working Groups: Working Group I deals with the physical science basis of climate change, Working Group II with impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability, and Working Group III with mitigation.

Of the 2858 experts from over 105 countries nominated, 721 were invited to participate as Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors, and Review Editors by these Working Groups. As a result of the IPCC’s selections, representatives from the MRI be will contributing to two key chapters falling under the remit of Working Group II. MRI Principle Investigator and Science Leadership Council (SLC) member Christian Huggel and SLC member Edwin Castellanos will be working on Chapter 12: Central and South America, while MRI Executive Director Carolina Adler will be contributing to Chapter 17: Decision-Making Options for Managing Risk.

Dr. Adler has also been chosen by the IPCC Co-Chairs for Working Group II to serve as the Lead for the AR6 Cross-Chapter Paper on Mountains.

“The MRI is very pleased to be directly involved in the IPCC’s assessment process,” said Dr. Adler. “In addition to contributing to our respective chapters in AR6, we look forward to jointly contrubuting to the Cross-Chapter Paper on Mountains - which I am personally thrilled to have been chosen to serve as the Lead for.”

Following their selection, the authors will now start to review the existing scientific literature and begin the drafting process. The contributions of the three IPCC Working Groups will be finalized in 2021, with a synthesis report completing the AR6 cycle in early 2022. This synthesis report will integrate both the Working Group contributions and the findings of the three IPCC Special Reports that are currently under development – towards which the MRI is also contributing due to its involvement in the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate.
