bulgaria 1327151 1280Taking place in Sofia 2-4 November, this international conference aims to explore new research and discuss the changes needed to address the challenges of the 21st century.

A celebration of 100 years since the founding of the Bulgarian Geographical Society is an opportunity to reflect on the past and look to the future. The Smart Geography conference will do both, contemplating global changes, the development of information technologies, and evolving conceptions of geography, while also outlining future prospects for science, education, and practice.

In doing so, the conference aims to provoke a discussion on how to stimulate ‘smart’ geographical thinking in order to support solutions to the world’s demographic and environmental challenges and contribute to the EU’s Smart Specialization Strategies.

The conference will cover areas of physical geography, such as climatology and hydrology, and human geography, such as geodemography and economics. It will explore geoinformation science, teaching and education, and hold interdisciplinary studies sessions on topics including landscape ecology, ecosystem services, natural hazards, and mountains.

Abstracts are now being invited for all sessions, and the MRI encourages the mountain research community to consider making a submission. Following the conference, participants will also have the opportunity to publish their work in:

• Peer-reviewed Springer series book on Key Challenges in Geography
• Special Issue of European Journal of Geography
• Special Issue of Journal of Bulgarian Geographical Society
• Special Issue of Journal Problems of Geography

The abstract submission deadline is 30 June 2018.
