The ANDEX 2026 Annual Meeting aims to strengthen scientific collaboration on hydroclimatic issues in the Andes while sharing progresses, insights, and challenges in a high-level academic environment.

ANDEX is a Regional Hydroclimatic Program for the Andes. The program is part of the GEWEX Hydroclimatology Panel (GHP) of the Global Energy and Water Exchanges Program (GEWEX), one of the core projects of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP). ANDEX aims to improve our understanding of, and predictions related to, climate and hydrology along the Andes cordillera, with water security for Andean populations and high-impact hydroclimatic events constituting its two main themes of research. As part of this, ANDEX integrates atmospheric and hydrological models, and assimilates local and remotely sensed data products. One key goal of ANDEX is to become a regional hydroclimatic program of reference that responds to the needs of society and contributes to planning and decision-making for the sustainable development of the Andean countries.

Background

Last year’s ANDEX 2025 Annual Meeting – co-sponsored by the Mountain Research Initiative – represented a key opportunity to strengthen regional scientific coordination, consolidate the work of the ANDEX Scientific Committee, and foster meaningful exchange among researchers with diverse backgrounds and career stages, with particularly active participation from the JovenANDEX network. Among the most notable achievements was the strengthening of the ANDEX Academia initiative, which included thematic workshops delivered by specialists and a range of interdisciplinary discussions oriented towards the capacity building of the Andean region.

The ANDEX 2026 Annual Meeting

The ANDEX 2026 Annual Meeting taking place in in Cuenca, Ecuador from 20-24 July 2026 aims to continue with this process of regional articulation and capacity strengthening. The meeting will consolidate the progress achieved to date, offer further training activities within the framework of ANDEX Academia, expand regional participation, and deepen the link between scientific knowledge production and decision-making in the Andean hydroclimatic context.

The meeting agenda and registration information will follow soon.
