The General Assembly 2027 of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) held in Vienna, Austria and online, from 4 April โ€“ 9 April 2027, is now accepting abstracts. This event includes several exciting, mountain-related sessions, including those convened by representatives of the MRI. The deadline for abstract submissions is Tuesday, 12 January 2027, at 13:00 CET. The support applications deadline is 1 December 2026.

The EGU General Assembly 2027 brings together geoscientists from all over the world to one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, planetary, and space sciences. The EGU aims to provide a forum where scientists, especially early career researchers, can present their work and discuss their ideas with experts in all fields of geoscience. Find out more on the EGU website.

The MRI is excited to announce our own endorsed sessions and we encourage the mountain research community to consider submitting an abstract!

MRI-Endorsed Sessions

Session ITS4/NH12 | Towards 2050: Understanding Change and Exploring Mountain Futures

Conveners: Margreth Keiler, Carolina Adler, Sven Fuchs, and Glenn Hunt

Mountain regions are undergoing rapid transformations driven by climate warming, cryosphere loss, hydrological and ecosystem change, and socio-economic developments. Looking towards 2050 provides an opportunity to explore how mountain social-ecological systems may evolve, the risks and opportunities that may emerge, and how research can inform decisions today.

This interdisciplinary session invites contributions exploring current trajectories and possible futures for mountain regions, including interactions between environmental and socio-economic change. Topics may span climate, cryosphere, water resources, ecosystems, natural hazards, land use, livelihoods, governance, and mountainโ€“lowland linkages.

We particularly welcome research connecting long-term observations with future scenarios, examining interactions between biophysical and human systems, and co-producing knowledge with communities, practitioners, and decision-makers. Contributions that advance integrated approaches to monitoring, adaptation, resilience, and sustainable mountain development are especially encouraged.

This session is endorsed and supported by the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) and the Institute for Interdisciplinary Mountain Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ร–AW).

Session AS1.12 | Mountain Weather and Climate: Theory, Observations, and Modeling

Conveners: Manuela Lehner, Nikolina Ban, Giorgio Doglioni, Olivia Ferguglia, and Sven Kotlarski

Mountain regions play a critical role in shaping weather and climate processes across spatial and temporal scales. Understanding these processes, and how they are changing, is essential for improving climate projections and assessing the impacts of global environmental change in mountain environments.

This session welcomes theoretical, observational, and modelling contributions addressing mountain weather and climate, including terrain-induced flows, orographic precipitation, landโ€“atmosphere interactions, forecasting and predictability, and interactions with the terrestrial cryosphere.

Particular emphasis is placed on climate processes and climate change in mountain regions, including advances in high-resolution climate modelling, observational approaches, and the evaluation of models over complex terrain.

Contributions addressing the interdisciplinary objectives of MRI’s Elevation-Dependent Climate Change (EDCC) Working Group are especially encouraged, alongside research connected to the TEAMx research programme.
