How do mountains inspire climate action? On International Mountain Day 2020, join an adventurer and experts to explore answers, MRI Executive Director Carolina Adler among them.

About this Event

"As I flew off Kilimanjaro on my solar-powered paraglider and turned for what might be my last look of my life at the ice there I made a vow to simply do better – not be perfect, just do better."

UNEP Mountain Hero Will Gadd travelled to Tanzania in early 2020 to ice climb the Messner Route on top of Kilimanjaro. What he encountered upon arrival was hard to believe: The route did not exist anymore because of glacier loss. Losing something he deeply cares for inspired Will to rethink what he can do to lessen his contribution to climate change.

Inspired by 'The Last Ascent' - a film about Will's journey on Kilimanjaro, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) organizes this Mountains High online session on International Mountain Day on 11 December 2020.

Join an inspiring conversation that brings together outdoor and nature enthusiasts with experts from the UN and science to discuss the effects of climate change on mountains and the power of sports for climate action.

Speakers:

• Mr. Will Gadd, UNEP Mountain Hero and ice-climber

• Ms. Carolina Adler, Mountain Research Initiative & UIAA

• Mr. Pantaleo Munishi, Sokoine University

• Ms. Lindita Xhaferi-Salihu, UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action

Moderator: Ms. Musonda Mumba, Chief Terrestrial Ecosystems Unit UNEP

The Mountains High session starts with footage of Kilimanjaro and then offers every speaker a platform (10 minutes) to present their insights. It fosters interactive dialogue with the audience.

The event offers a platform to showcase the beauty and fragility of mountain ecosystems, the effects of climate change and the urgent need for action. It highlights activities from the Adaptation at Altitude programme.
