MRI Workshop: 'From Elevation Dependent Warming to Elevation Dependent Climate Change'

15/09/2022 17/09/2022

MRI Event

Event location

University of Innsbruck
Innsbruck

Taking place after the International Mountain Conference 2022 in Innsbruck, Austria, this workshop held by the MRI Elevation Dependent Climate Change Working Group will focus on elevational gradients of change in key meteorological/climate variables and their broader consequences. Registration now open!

Executive Committee: Nick Pepin (chair), Martha Apple, Muhammad Hashmi, Elisa Palazzi, Forrest Schoessow, Qinglong You.

About the Workshop

In 2014, the MRI held a workshop to consider the evidence for accelerated climate warming at high elevations. This resulted in a publication in Nature Climate Change which brought this issue to the attention of the worldwide community.

In 2022, we invite you to join us for our second workshop focused on elevational gradients of change in key meteorological/climate variables and their broader consequences.

This second workshop will reflect on the changing status of our knowledge since 2014, and expand the discussion to consider a more holistic appreciation of climate change as manifest in high mountains. In particular, we will consider multivariate patterns and processes along the elevational gradients as we broaden the concept of elevation-dependent warming to elevation-dependent climate change.

We will also consider regional similarities and teleconnections, document key gaps in our observations and models, and identify future research priorities in mountain science.

The central phenomena of interest include elevational gradients of change in meteorological/climate variables and their broader consequences.

Programme (tbc)

The workshop is two days in length: 3pm on Thursday 15 Sept to noon on Saturday 17 Sept.

  • Session Day 1 (Thu 15): What have we learnt since the last workshop on Elevation-Dependant Warming in 2014?
  • Session Day 2 (Fri 16): What is the evidence for changing elevation gradients in precipitation and snow cover (and other variables?): Data and results
  • Session Day 3 (Sat 17): What are the regional sensitivities to EDCC? How are different mountains similar? What are the broader teleconnections with the larger climate system?

The workshop will take place at the University of Innsbruck, room number o-3.36 ("Fakultätssitzungsaal"). There is no registration fee for this workshop, with refreshments provided to all workshop participants, courtesy of the MRI. However, participants will need to fund their own travel and accommodation arrangements. A workshop dinner will be provided on Friday 16 Sept.

The workshop is primarily a face to face event, but we are planning to offer a couple of short online synthesis sessions to facilitate long-distance contributions. These are likely to be in the afternoon European time (early morning in America/ late evening in China). There is an option on the registration page to indicate if you are interested in remote attendance.

Registration deadline 31 May 2022.

Important note: The workshop is receiving a lot of interest and is heavily subscribed. Further applications will be considered but are not guaranteed at this point. A confirmation of admission will be sent end of June.
