As the IPCC AR7 gets underway, the MRI is calling for expressions of interest for experts interested and willing to engage in coordinated efforts to develop assessment-relevant scientific syntheses and technical analyses on mountains. Deadline to register: 23:59 CET, Friday 31 October 2025.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the United Nations body responsible for assessing the science related to climate change. Established in 1988, it provides policymakers with regular scientific assessments on climate change, its risks and impacts, and options for adaptation and mitigation.
The upcoming IPCC AR7 report, through its Working Group II contribution titled ‘Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability’, will include a Cross‑Chapter Paper on “high‑altitude and mountain regions”. This means that in addition to regional and thematic assessments, there will be a dedicated synthesis of evidence for mountains, particularly regarding vulnerabilities, risks, adaptation pathways, and the special challenges facing high‑altitude ecosystems and societies. The full outline for the Working Group II contribution can be found here (starting on page six).
This call aims to respond to assessment gaps identified in the IPCC AR6, particularly in systematic syntheses and analysis of evidence pertaining to impacts and adaptation in mountains, as well as address gaps in bringing relevant evidence from less-represented mountain regions
The registry will bring together interested experts to participate in coordinated efforts to support mountain-relevant assessments in the AR7, and actively engage with mountain researchers and practitioners in generating these outputs. These contributions could include (but are not limited to):
- coordinated global syntheses and/or analyses on observed changes, detection and attribution, impact assessments, risk assessments, adaptation response and implementation, finance etc., including evidence from less represented mountain regions;
- updated key statistics published in AR6 on basic information, facts, and figures about mountains, worldwide;
- relevant region-specific data and information as part of a global assessment;
among other content needed for the assessment task.
The registry will also be useful to identify and nominate potential IPCC Contributing Authors for mountain-relevant chapters, for expert reviews of report drafts, and other capacity-building and training opportunities.
All disciplines and areas of expertise are welcomed, including early career researchers and young professionals, and experts from less-represented regions.
Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of globally coordinated efforts to support the IPCC AR7 and help elevate relevant content and evidence on mountains in this seventh assessment effort! To register your interest, click on the button below and fill out the form by 23:59 CET, 31 October 2025.
