The Alpine Convention has announced the publication of the 10th Report on the State of the Alps (RSA10), focusing on Quality of Life in the Alps. The report is now available in all Alpine languages as well as English, along with a user-friendly, print-at-home factsheet to support broader dissemination.

Prepared under the Slovenian Presidency of the Alpine Convention (2023–2024), RSA10 marks the first time the Convention has taken a comprehensive, cross-cutting look at quality of life in the Alpine region. Rather than approaching the topic through isolated fields, the report addresses quality of life as a multidimensional issue—spanning ecological, economic, and social aspects.

Drawing on spatial and statistical data, an Alpine-wide survey, and a variety of other sources, RSA10 offers an in-depth assessment of current conditions in the region. It also looks ahead to the future, identifying key threats such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and demographic and economic transformations that may impact Alpine inhabitants’ well-being.

A central theme of the report is the role of governance in tackling these complex, interconnected challenges. RSA10 emphasizes the importance of cross-sectoral cooperation, place-based approaches, and inclusive public participation in policy-making processes.

The report was developed with the active involvement of experts from the Alpine Convention’s Contracting Parties and Observers, including the International Scientific Committee on Research in the Alps (ISCAR). MRI’s Executive Director, Dr. Carolina Adler, a delegated member of ISCAR, participated in this process as part of the ad hoc working group that contributed to the development of RSA10, helping to ensure the report reflects scientific insight and relevance for the region.

To guide future action, the report presents seven policy recommendations designed to enhance resilience and secure a high quality of life for present and future generations in the Alps. These recommendations also support progress toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
