The Afromontane Research Unit and Department of Plant Sciences at the University of the Free State (UFS): Qwaqwa campus, is advertising a Post-doctoral fellowship focusing on reproductive ecology of indigenous and invasive plant species in Afromontane regions of Southern Africa. Deadline to apply is 31 October 2020.

The Qwaqwa campus is situated at the foot of the Northern Maloti-Drakensberg mountain range in the eastern Free State Province which supports an extremely diverse flora. The location thus offers the opportunity to explore evolutionary trends in plant traits associated with a variety of plant-animal interactions in Afromontane ecosystems, including the use of indigenous fauna as pollinators and seed dispersers by exotic plant species.

Fellowship Details

  • One year with the option of renewing for a second year, depending on performance.
  • The Fellowship is valued at ZAR220,000.00 for one year (12 months) with R30,000.00 for running costs.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates should have preferably completed their Doctoral studies within the past 5 years, or can show proof of pending graduation in 2020.
  • Applications from South African and international candidates are welcomed.
  • Candidates may not hold full-time salaried employment during the tenure of the award.
  • The following intellectual/experience background will be preferred:
    • Basic taxonomic knowledge and experience with herbarium specimens.
    • A background in evolutionary biology, pollination &/or dispersal ecology.
    • A willingness to co-supervise postgraduate students.
    • Excellent data analysis and writing skills.
  • It is highly recommended that the Fellow have a valid drivers’ license.

A Fellowship is currently available for this position, and will be awarded on a competitive basis, taking into account the applicants' academic achievements and research potential.
