The UNFCCC COP 29 side event “Accelerating Climate Action for Mountains and Mountain People – specialized approach for each region” will build upon the momentum gained at COP 28 and the outcomes of the Expert Dialogue on Mountains and Climate Change held at SBSTA 60.

Mountains, covering nearly one-quarter of the Earth’s surface, are critical ecosystems supporting 1.1 billion people and providing essential resources such as water, biodiversity and cultural heritage. However, mountain regions are increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, threatening both mountain and downstream communities.

Main event aims:

  • mobilize governments and organizations to strengthen political alliances
  • mainstream mountain issues under the UNFCCC
  • develop actions to strengthen the link between the three Rio Conventions
  • reinforce the Negotiating Group “Mountain Partnership” to advocate for sustainable mountain development

This side event is co-organized by the Governments of Kyrgyzstan, Andorra and Bhutan, alongside OIKOS Association and Karnali Integrated Rural Development and Research Centre (KIRDARC), within the frameworks of the Mountain Partnership and the Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions 2023–2027.
