Following the designation of 2022 as the ‘International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD),’ the United Nations General Assembly has now proclaimed 2024 to 2033 as the ‘International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD).’
This significant declaration underscores the imperative to bridge across scientific disciplines and knowledge forms to effectively address the complex and intricate challenges of our time. The IDSSD represents a pivotal moment for the MRI community to engage in a global-led effort to see meaningful contributions from science towards transformative change.
The MRI supports the International Science Council (ISC) in welcoming this proclamation as a “recognition, at the higher international level, that achieving sustainable development requires a global transdisciplinary and multidimensional approach – one that bridges science disciplines, all forms of knowledge, and the realms of science, policy, and action,” principles that the MRI has championed since its inception in the mid-1990s.
The MRI Coordination Office, alongside its Governing Body, Working Groups, partners, and the wider community, is committed to actively contributing to this pivotal decade. By placing a focus on mountains and mountain research for sustainable mountain development worldwide, the MRI aims to play a crucial role in advancing the goals of this groundbreaking initiative.
